This collection unites two iconic Japanese mediums: urushi and washi.
Urushi is a precious resource that is only available in limited quantities. Since Washi is highly absorbent, many layers of urushi are required to create these pieces. For several months, layer after layer is applied and dried to ensure the washi doesn’t warp and the final product is beautiful structurally and chromatically.
Part of the artisan’s artistic series, these statement pieces draw the eye and create visual anchors in your space. The washi and urushi treatment gives these objects the look and feel of something that has survived millennia.
About the artisan
Hayamizu Keiichiro
Hayamizu spent many years in Tokyo as an office worker but originally trained at an arts university. He returned to his hometown of Kagoshima to connect with his roots and seek artistic inspiration. His journey led him into its craft culture and he began specializing in the interplay of washi and urushi.
By adopting principles of the 400-year-old craft of ikkanbari, where washi is overlaid on a frame and coated in layers of urushi to create a protective and richly colored surface, Hayamizu’s series blends artistic and practical forms.
His unique approach also incorporates local materials like volcanic ash and local pigments to add depth and originality to the pieces, which take several months to make.
