About the artisan
Nishikawa Sudare
The workshop was founded in 1831, and has been making blinds for almost 200 years. The company’s second generation was part of the move to popularize sudare, helping them go from exclusive use in the homes of nobility to more widespread use for the general public.
Today, the workshop behind these sudare screens is passionate about facing the challenge of carrying on the tradition of sudare craftsmanship, especially as the bamboo industry faces decline.
