This collection brings the spirit and skill of stonework traditionally reserved for Japanese Zen gardens into the modern home.
Completely handmade from start to finish, each piece is designed to highlight the joy of stone as a medium, making it accessible in size, shape, and function for interior use.
This tsukubai is designed to host a living plant, with a hole in the bottom for drainage. The visual effect of a live plant making its home in stone serves as a beautiful metaphor for the course of nature reclaiming space.
About the artisan
Ishiura Kenji of Nishimura Tōrō-Ten
Nishimura Tōrō-Ten has been creating stoneworks for Japanese gardens for seven generations. In addition to their original pieces that are iconic to Zen gardens, their work ranges from restoration stone pieces from across Japan’s historical eras to contemporary collaborations with noteworthy designers such as Isamu Noguchi.
Ishiura Kenji is part of the Nishimura team working to bring the tradition and legacy of stonework to a new audience. Harnessing the same hand-sculpted techniques used on garden pieces, he shows how multifaceted stone can be by translating that skill into pieces designed for everyday use.
