An offcut of an offcut. This incense stand celebrates the circularity of traditional, handcrafted objects.

The stand is offered in square and triangle shaped variants, but each piece will slightly differ, reflecting the free-form nature of its creation.

The offcuts created when making headstones — the typical application of hon-komatsu stone — were previously understood as a non-renewable waste material.

These initial offcuts are repurposed by TOU to create their collection of vases and trays. Then, ensuring that every single piece of this prized hon-kamatsu stone is utilised, the offcuts created when making vases and trays become incense stands.

This innovative approach to materials and process offers a sustainable solution within a wider stonemasonry practice.

Each piece crafted by TOU is entirely unique in its shape and color characteristics. Depending on how the stone was exposed to the elements, and how it was carved away from an eventual headstone, it could reveal blue-grey or brown-red flecks and streaks.

Care

This product is designed to be used with Sen Incense.
The best way to remove ash residue is simply to brush or wipe it off with a dry dishcloth.
If washing to remove ash residue, please rinse with plain water, do not use soap or a scrub brush, and dry thoroughly to ensure no moisture is left behind.
