This linen wall decor is handcrafted by Kiyoe Masao. He specializes in dyeing with natural materials, one of them being indigo dye which was used to create this piece. It comes in two varieties: noren (Japanese fabric divider with two panels) and tapestry.

The shades of blue are achieved by several rounds of dyeing, while the dynamic pattern is created with the traditional shibori , or Japanese tie dye, technique.

Masao Kiyoe is a shibori-zome (Japanese tie-dye) craftsperson based in Kyoto, specializing in kusaki-zome—a traditional dyeing method using natural colors extracted from plants. Dyeing runs deep in his lineage, with relatives having dedicated generations to the art. Originally working in construction, he shifted paths after an accident and immersed himself in the world of natural dyes, tying (shibori) and dyeing (zome) techniques. For over 47 years, he has created textiles that reflect Japan’s seasons, nature, and heritage, all from his intimate workshop nestled near Kiyomizu Temple.
