This candle set features traditional warasouku candles, known for their bright, steady flame. The thicker, tapered wick — made from washi hand-wrapped in igusa — provides stability to the flame. This brings a calm, meditative feeling to any room.

The candles are made with traditional ingredients, which are entirely plant-based. The mellow, yellow-colored candles are made with rice bran, and the powdered, grey-colored candles are made with nuts from the Japanese wax tree.

Each set comes with a brass wick trimmer you can use to snuff the flame and rid the wick of charred parts.

Select your preferred candle stand in either the brass or black colorway.

Each candle has a burn time of approximately 50 minutes, so you can use it as an informal timer for meditation or focus activities.

The incense holder is crafted by Nousaku, a metal casting family business located in Takaoka in Toyama Prefecture. This town, which centers around one of Japan’s great (metal) Buddhas, flourished into a metalwork district 400 years ago with the support of feudal lord Maeda. Nousaku, founded in 1916, started its business making Buddhist ritual objects and traditional Japanese tea sets. Adapting to the shift in lifestyle, the current president (5th generation) decided to start making beautiful home accessories using metal-casting techniques, which have been passed down through generations.

Care

To start using your candle, light it, wait for the wick to char, and then use the wick trimmers to shorten the wick to just 2cm, or 1/2 an inch tall. If your wick gets longer than 5cm or 1 inch, use the trimmers to snuff the candle by pinching the wick, and then break off the wick with the trimmers until it's 2cm/ 1/2 an inch again. Do not blow out the candle, only snuff.
Keep space surrounding the candle free of flammable objects.
Never leave a lit candle unattended.
Since organic materials are used in the candles, there's the possibility of sputtering. Keep the surroundings free of flammable objects in case of sparks.
Always use the candles with the base to catch melting wax.
The brass holder will heat up as the flame nears the base, so be sure to let it cool down before touching it.
