Sakiori Rug
Delight in the beauty and ingenuity of our sakiori-made denim rug.
In Japan’s colder regions, cotton has always been difficult to grow, making it a precious resource. When clothing became worn, people would often reinforce it with sashiko stitching. Then, when clothing could no longer be repaired in this way, it would be cut into narrow strips and woven together to create a brand new textile.
This traditional technique is known as sakiori (裂き(saki) - tear, 織り(ori) - weave). Originating in Japan’s Edo period, it is an example of the country’s resourcefulness, often accessed through acts of craftsmanship.

Care Instructions
- Indigo dye may transfer easily through friction or exposure to water. Please wash separately from other items.
- To prevent loss of shape and fraying, hand washing with a mild detergent is recommended.
- Avoid tumble drying, as it may cause shrinkage or damage. Reshape the item and air dry in the shade.
- As the fabric is woven from narrow strips, threads may come loose due to snagging or wear. If this happens, do not pull the thread; simply trim it with scissors.
