Based on Awaji Island, the region is known for being the original birthplace of incense in Japan. The history of incense in Japan dates back to an April day in 595 AD, according to The Chronicles of Japan (720 AD) when a piece of aromatic wood drifted to the shores of Awaji Island. With its year-long warm climate and ample sea breeze, the island is an ideal place to dry the incense - a crucial process in its making.

How to use your incense

Sen incense

Ignite the tip of the incense with a lighter or match
Blow out the flame after a few seconds
Place the incense stick in a holder that can collect the ash

Uzumaki incense

Light the outer end of the incense swirl with a lighter or match
Blow out the flame after a few seconds
Place the swirl on the included non-flammable mat on top of an incense burner or plate to catch the ash.

Leaf incense

Light the tip of the leaf incense with a lighter or match
Blow out the flame after a few seconds
Place the leaf on the included non-flammable mat on top of an incense burner or plate to catch the ash.
