While urushi is the foundation for the famous kintsugi repair method, it can also be used to protect and upgrade various materials. Versatile fuki urushi can be applied by simply placing a small amount onto a cloth and distributing it evenly over a wooden surface.
About Urushi
Urushi is a Japanese traditional lacquer made of natural tree sap taken from the urushi tree. Lacquer was used in Japan as early as 5,000 BCE and has been a central part of Japanese craftsmanship ever since. Hardened urushi lacquer forms a protective waterproof coating that repels mold and mildew, and also prevents rotting and weathering.

Urushi contains a compound that can cause minor skin irritation, to a more severe allergic reaction, depending on the individual. While urushi can cause skin irritation in its raw, wet state, once it has completely hardened, it is absolutely food-safe and one of the most durable natural materials.

For most people, touching urushi will cause minor irritation and itchy skin that can last up to three weeks. Proper handling like wearing gloves and a long-sleeve shirt help to prevent accidental contact with urushi.
