Inspired by the shape of an egg, these cups are designed to nestle comfortably in your hands. They’re crafted from the wood of wild cherry trees (sakura), known for its beauty and durability.
Vertical cutting following the direction of growth ensures each cup is resistant to warping. Due to its quality craftsmanship, which includes an urushi lacquer finish, these cups are perfect for both hot and cold drinks, making them functional as well as beautiful.
The wood grain texture is visible in all variations, but with three colors to choose from, you can pick an assortment or adhere to a consistent palette.
About the craftsman
Yamanaka lacquerware
The tableware is made using kijibiki woodturning and lacquerware techniques in Yamanaka Onsen, Ishikawa Prefecture. To highlight the original beauty of the tree and ensure the durability of the ware, craftspeople opt to saw tategi-dori following the direction of the wood grain.
Gato Mikiko Shoten is responsible for coordinating the production of these pieces among multiple artisans and workshops in the Yamanaka area. From wood turning, to urushi application, to final touches, each piece passes through the hands of expert artisans.
