Nishikawa

The Nishikawa workshop was founded in 1831, and has been making bamboo products for almost 200 years. Before their founding, Kyoto bamboo crafts had focused on everyday items such as colanders, but by incorporating the cultures of tea ceremony and flower arrangement, the second generation of the family laid the foundation for Kyoto bamboo crafts as we know them today. They are known for their sudare blinds and bamboo weaving.

Today, the Nishikawa workshop is passionate about facing the challenge of carrying on the tradition of bamboo craftsmanship, especially as the industry faces decline. They remain committed to selecting high quality materials and preserving traditional techniques.
