These abstract canvases are painted by Nakajima Takeshi, a young craftsman who is reviving the traditional techniques of hikizome (brush-dyed textiles).
Brush dying is a technique traditionally used as one step of the dying process to make kimonos, but Nakajima's approach is deliberately boundary pushing: instead of making the brushstrokes invisible, he allows the evidence of the brush's journey to remain on the work, adding to its individuality.
Resembling the diffusion of sumi ink, these canvases convey depth and dimension. Using traditional techniques, the pieces are at once contemporary and timeless.
