Handcrafted bamboo chopsticks made of Kyoto bamboo. This classic shape is not only timeless and simple, it is also light, precise, and slip proof. You won't be able to go back to any other chopsticks once you've tried these.
We are working with the Kosuga family that has specialized in bamboo for six generations. Established in 1898, the family-operated business began as the purveyor of bamboo crafts to the Japanese Imperial Family. Since then, the family has elevated the utilitarian handiwork of woven bamboo items to pieces with great artistic value.
Madake is a native bamboo to Japan and often used in traditional crafts. It is known for its high quality due to its thickness and flexibility.
Gomadake, or 'sesame bamboo', and Zumendake, or 'blueprint bamboo', have black spots that appear naturally when the bamboo is exposed to excess moisture.
Susudake, or 'smoked bamboo', is the rarest of all the types. This bamboo gets its color from continuous exposure to smoke on top of traditional fireplaces called irori. The nature of it being aged and smoked makes the bamboo stronger, and it was very popular for that reason. Nowadays, this bamboo is difficult to obtain since traditional houses are rare.
