The Sumi Fan - Kaze

This minimal fan uses calligraphic brush strokes to represent the ebb and flow of a summer's breeze; sometimes strong, sometimes soft, but filling an invisible space in our day, even when we don't notice.

The sumi fans are a collab between 200-year-old fan maker Miyawaki Baisenan and Iwaki Honoka, a young calligrapher with an expressive approach to brushwork.

This multi-generational business has produced elegant fans since the Edo period, beginning in 1823. Throughout its history, it’s had close ties with Kyoto’s literati and artists—its shop name was even bestowed by painter Tomioka Tessai.
