Joinery Bench Black | POJ Studio x Norm Architects
This is the second piece in our Joinery Series, designed in partnership with Norm Architects.
Using traditional sashimono (Japanese no-nails wood joinery method), the components of this bench are carved so they slot together perfectly, ensuring a sturdy build. You'll experience the art of joinery for yourself, appreciating the precision in design as you interlock each piece.
With a minimal design that still carries the visual identity of classic Japanese forms, this bench is suited to interiors the whole world over.
Made of dense hinoki (cypress), this project aims to contribute to Japan’s sustainable foresting practice by rebalancing ecosystems and bringing more work to Japanese carpenters skilled in joinery techniques.
This collaboration is born of shared values: both POJ Studio and Norm Architects place people, craft, and quality at the center of everything we do.
By acquiring this bench, you enter into our ecosystem of design, sustainability, and cultural preservation that we are eager to share with the rest of the world.

Everyday Use
- This product is for indoor use only: use outdoors may cause deterioration or damage
- Place on a flat, level surface
- If the bench wobbles, discontinue use until the issue is resolved
- Do not stand on the bench or use it as a step
- Avoid strong impacts such as dropping or knocking the bench
Placement
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as this may cause warping or fading
- Do not place near direct airflow from air conditioning or heating units
- Avoid environments that are excessively humid or dry
- As a natural material, wood breathes continuously — its fibers will expand and contract depending on the surrounding environment
Care & Maintenance
- For daily cleaning, wipe with a soft dry cloth
- For visible stains, use a soft cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water, wrung out thoroughly, and wipe the affected area. Gently clean the surrounding area as well, then finish with a dry cloth. Residual moisture can cause mold or staining — avoid sitting on the bench with bare or wet skin for the same reason.
- Do not use alcohol or solvents
- Do not pour water directly onto the bench
- Do not leave the bench wet
