Ainu Noren
This is POJ Studio's first collaboration with the indigenous Ainu community of Hokkaido, Japan. We worked with Kayano Kimihiro, the founder of Nibutani Works. The company is dedicated to creating sustainable jobs for young Ainu artisans and preserving Ainu crafts for the next generation. Together with Mr. Kayano and designer Hase Yuka, we created this noren and our Ainu Blanket.
Ainu embroidery has both historic and social significance: appliqué and embroidery work on Ainu clothing was always done by women. From mother to daughter, this unique tradition was handed down from generation to generation.
Each noren is individually hand-stitched by the mother-in-law and wife of Mr. Kayano, meaning they can only be produced in limited quantities. Please note that this noren is designed and dyed to be one-sided.
We care deeply about our partnership with the Ainu community, and are passionate about fostering opportunities that help preserve the rich craft traditions that are part of their heritage.
