This low folding screen helps divide space without making it feel closed off. Its unique square design is a departure from the more traditional rectangular dividers.
White-on-white cutouts of circles, triangles, and squares add geometric points of interest, but they also call to a deeper Buddhist philosophy.
The triangles refer to the shape of the body in seated meditation (zazen), the circles represent the harmony of the whole universe, and the squares represent the ‘frame’ of stepping into and out of a state of zen.
This folding screen is a physical representation of these Zen Buddhist principles.
About the artist
Tete
Tete is an artist based in Kyoto. She takes the scraps from leftover sheets of washi and creates unique and organic textured patchwork-style pieces, aiming to diversify and expand the use of washi in modern homes.
Tete (whose name takes inspiration from the French word thé for tea) began her creative journey with washi by making tools and storage for tea.
She draws inspiration from the material of washi itself, saying each piece has its own character. When selecting which pieces to combine, they’ll ‘speak’ to her, leading her to a creative decision.
