This unique piece handcrafted by Gaku Nakane encountered damage during transit.
Rather than returning or disposing of it, we opted to revive and renew its life by repairing it with kintsugi.
Using traditional techniques, this piece is restored with 100% natural urushi lacquer and 24k gold powder.
ABOUT THE ARTISAN
Gaku Nakane, the 27-year-old potter, was raised by artisan parents in the idyllic countryside of Shiga prefecture.
A striking cliff and boundless forest are the scenes from his childhood. Playing amongst the natural environment as a child, and observing the textures of trees, surfaces of rocks, and other materials that have withstood the test of time, have shaped his own artistic identity - one that is whimsical yet bold.
Each of his pottery pieces is made by layering two types of clay. When firing, the discrepancy in shrinkage between the two layers creates a unique crackled pattern on each vessel and sculpture. Gaku hopes to bring warmth and charm to homes near and far through his work.
