This chasen tea whisk is handcrafted by Tango Tanimura, a 20th generation tea whisk craftsman who is carrying the legacy of his family that has been making tea utensils for more than five centuries in Nara.
Made for whisking finely ground tea leaves with hot water, the chasen is skillfully carved by hand from a single piece of bamboo in a way that does not warp or break easily to make the best quality matcha.
This delicate yet resilient tea whisk is available in two types of bamboo: kurochiku, or 'black bamboo' and hachiku, or 'white bamboo'. Find the chashaku tea scoop in the same colors here.
The chasen comes with the handle glued to the box. To remove the glued paper from the whisk, soak the handle in water for a bit and gently rub off the paper with a towel.
To clean the chasen, whisk it in lukewarm water, rinse it in water, and pat it dry. Do not use soap or put it in the dishwasher.
Store in a well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight.
